詞源記憶法
language一詞原義為“舌頭”，它和法語langue一樣，來源于意為“舌頭”的拉丁詞lingua。
另有幾個詞如lingo（隱語，行話），linguistics（語言學），lingua franca（混合語）等均出于此源。l
anguage原作langage，這一形式借自法語，language中的字母u是13世紀時和法語詞langue（語言）相聯系而加上的。
還有另一個英語單詞tongue，究其根源也與拉丁詞lingua有關。tongue和language都可以指“語言”，但tongue書卷氣較重些。
在文藝復興時期人們習慣把希伯來語、希臘語和拉丁語稱作the three tongues，即“三大古典語言”。
在這三種語言中表示“舌頭”的詞也可以表示“語言”。
基督教徒把“圣靈所賜的口才”稱作the gift of tongues，意即圣靈降臨于耶穌門徒身上使他們具有的特異語言才能。

這一點西方人也有深刻認識。因此，表示“語言”的英語單詞language的本意就是“舌頭”。它來自拉丁文linguaticum，詞根lingua就是“舌頭”的意思。
